I know exactly what you mean. We have various gap cardigans starting with the first and all 3 them have worn it (and even some friends kids). You really only need one good cardigan for each age and Gap have been the best for us. Some of them have extended wear well beyond the suggested size!
they must have a good knits designer! too bad most of the gap stuff i see has logos and embroideries i don’t like (including the small bear embroidery that they put on all baby stuff– it bugs me!)
